Buying a dinner set in Dubai is mostly an exercise in guessing. Listings quote piece counts without saying how many people they seat, plate diameters are rarely given, and "porcelain" and "stoneware" get used as though they mean the same thing. They do not, and the difference decides whether your plates survive five years of dishwasher cycles.
This guide covers the three decisions that matter - how many pieces you need, which material suits how you actually eat, and what each plate size is for - then points you at the pieces worth starting with.
How many pieces do you actually need?
A "place setting" is one person’s worth of plates. Most sets are sold in multiples of it. The number you need is not the number of people who live in your home; it is the number of people you are willing to feed at once.

Two sets, layered |
The rule most people get wrong: buy for the dinner party, not the Tuesday. Breakage is not a risk, it is a certainty, and open-stock replacement is far easier than matching a discontinued set two years later. If you host at all, add two settings above what you think you need.
The four-plate rule. A full setting is a dinner plate, a side or salad plate, a bowl, and something for dessert. Sets that count mugs into the total to reach "16 pieces" are seating four people, not eight. Read the piece breakdown, not the headline number.
Stoneware, porcelain or bone china
All three are fired clay. What separates them is firing temperature and what happens at the edges when they meet a granite worktop.

For most UAE homes the honest answer is porcelain or stoneware for the everyday set, and something finer kept separately for occasions. A single "does everything" set almost always means compromising on one side.
Plate sizes, decoded
Diameter is the specification nobody publishes and everybody notices. A dinner plate that is too small makes a generous portion look crowded; one that is too large will not fit a standard dishwasher rack on the bottom tier.
|
Plate |
Typical diameter |
What it holds |
|
Dinner plate |
26–28 cm |
The main course. 27 cm is the safe default. |
|
Side / salad plate |
20–22 cm |
Salad, bread, a starter, or as a charger under a bowl. |
|
Dessert plate |
18–20 cm |
Cake, fruit, pastries - also the best plate for kids. |
|
Coupe bowl |
18–20 cm |
Pasta, curry, grain bowls. The most-used shape in most homes. |
|
Soup bowl |
15–18 cm |
Soup, dessert, cereal. |
Measure your cabinet first. Standard UAE kitchen upper cabinets are 30–35 cm deep. A 28 cm dinner plate fits; a 30 cm charger frequently does not, and ends up living on a shelf it was not bought for. Measure before you order.
Why the matching set is optional
The dinner set as a single boxed purchase is a retail convention, not a design rule. Building from open stock gives you three advantages: you replace breakages individually, you scale up for hosting without buying a second full set, and the table stops looking like a hotel.
The method that works is to keep one element constant and vary the rest. Hold the dinner plate consistent in a neutral, then let the side plates, bowls and dessert plates carry colour and pattern. The table reads as intentional because the largest, most repeated shape is uniform.
-
Pick a neutral dinner plate in a shape you can re-buy - coupe or rimmed, then stay with it.
-
Vary at the side-plate layer, where pattern is seen but not sat under food.
-
Keep bowls in one glaze family so stacking stays tidy.
-
Bring pattern in through table linen rather than the plates if you want to change the look seasonally.

Making it last
-
Stack with felt or paper between plates. Unglazed foot rings are the abrasive that scratches the plate beneath, not the dishwasher.
-
Load the dishwasher so plates do not touch. Chips happen from contact during the cycle, not from the water.
-
Let stoneware come to room temperature before it goes into a hot oven. Thermal shock cracks it; heat alone does not.
-
Keep metallic-trimmed pieces out of the microwave, permanently.
-
Buy two spare dinner plates at purchase. Two years on, the glaze batch will have moved even if the product has not.
Frequently asked questions
How many pieces is a dinner set for 6?
Six place settings, which usually means 18 pieces at minimum (dinner plate, side plate and bowl per person) or 24 if dessert plates are included. Piece counts above 24 usually add mugs or serving pieces rather than more settings.
What size is a standard dinner plate?
26–28 cm across. Anything under 25 cm is functionally a side plate; anything over 30 cm is a charger and is meant to sit under other plates rather than hold food.
Is stoneware or porcelain better for everyday use?
Porcelain is denser and slightly more chip-resistant; stoneware is heavier and hides wear better. Both handle daily use. Choose on feel and on whether you want a matte or a glassy surface.
Can I mix plates from different sets?
Yes, and it is usually the better-looking option. Keep the dinner plate consistent and vary the layers above it. The repeated shape is what makes the table read as deliberate.
Where can I see the plates in person?
Curate Home has a physical presence at Depachika, Nakheel Mall. Details are on the stockists page.
