Most people own one serving platter and it is the wrong size. It is either a dinner plate pretending to be a platter, or it is enormous and comes out twice a year. Neither helps when eight people arrive and everything has to go on the table at once.
This is a working guide to serving platters in Dubai - which sizes earn their storage space, what marble does that ceramic does not, and how to build a board that actually feeds a room.
The three platters that do everything
You do not need a set. You need three shapes, and they cover almost every situation.
|
Shape |
Rough size |
What it does |
|
Long rectangle |
40–50 cm |
The grazing board. Runs down the centre of a table, feeds 6–8, doubles as a cheese board. |
|
Large round |
30–35 cm |
Anything served in a pile - grilled meat, roast vegetables, pastries, fruit. |
|
Chip and dip |
25–30 cm |
The one people underestimate. A recessed well means the dip stops migrating. |
Add a footed stand only if you host standing-up gatherings. Height creates a second serving layer on a crowded table, which is the entire reason cake stands survive.
Marble or ceramic?
This is the decision people agonise over and it comes down to what you are serving.

|
Marble |
Ceramic / porcelain |
|
Temperature |
Stays cold. Cheese and butter hold shape far longer - genuinely useful in a Dubai summer. |
Room temperature. Fine for anything served warm or immediately. |
|
Weight |
Heavy. Sits still on a table but is awkward to pass. |
Light enough to hand around. |
|
Surface |
Porous. Stains from oil, wine, turmeric and citrus if left. |
Glazed and non-porous. Wipes clean. |
|
Knife-friendly |
Yes - cut directly on it. |
No. Cutting on glaze scratches it and dulls the knife. |
|
Care |
Hand wash, dry immediately, seal periodically. |
Usually dishwasher safe. |
|
Best for |
Cheese, charcuterie, butter, chocolate, fruit. |
Hot food, saucy food, everyday serving. |
Why marble is the right call for cheese specifically. Marble holds its temperature far longer than a ceramic plate, so soft cheese stays firm and butter stays spreadable rather than sliding. Chill the slab for twenty minutes before guests arrive and it will hold for the length of a normal gathering.
How to build a board that feeds eight
The reason most home cheese boards look sparse is quantity, not arrangement. Work from these numbers first, then arrange.
-
Cheese: 80–100 g per person if it is an appetiser, 150–200 g if it is the meal. Three cheeses is the working minimum - something soft, something hard, something with character.
-
Cut before serving: the first cut is the one nobody wants to make. Slice a few pieces off each cheese so the board is already in use.
-
Anchor, then fill: place the cheeses and any bowls first, spaced apart. Everything else fills the gaps between them.
-
Bowls for anything loose: olives, honey, jam and nuts need containment or they take over.
-
Crackers off the board: they go soft against cheese and they take space you need. Serve alongside.
-
Cover the wood or stone: visible gaps read as an unfinished board. Fill with grapes, dried fruit or herbs - volume is cheap.
One knife per cheese, always. A shared knife means everything tastes like the blue.

A platter is a good gift, for one specific reason
Serveware is the rare homeware category where the recipient almost certainly does not own the right one. Everyone has plates. Very few people have a 45 cm board and a set of cheese knives, and nobody buys them for themselves until the evening they need them.
That makes a marble board with knives a reliable housewarming or host gift - it is used rather than stored, and it does not have to match anything the recipient already owns.

Frequently asked questions
What size cheese board do I need for 8 people?
A 40–50 cm board, holding roughly 800 g of cheese if it is an appetiser. Two smaller boards placed at each end of the table work better than one large one when guests are seated - nobody has to reach.
Is marble or wood better for a cheese board?
Marble, if the cheese is soft or the room is warm, because it holds cold. Wood is lighter and more forgiving of knife marks. Both take a knife directly; glazed ceramic does not.
How do I clean a marble platter?
Warm water, mild soap, dry immediately. No citrus or vinegar cleaners - acid etches the surface. Not dishwasher safe.
How much cheese per person on a grazing board?
80–100 g per person as an appetiser, 150–200 g if the board is the meal. Three varieties minimum.
Do serving platters come gift-wrapped?
Gift wrapping is available - see the gift wrap options. Confirm any specific packaging requirement at checkout.
